The Next Best Thing

ADR/ODR is the next best thing to happen to Indian Judiciary.

The Indian judiciary today is neck-deep in pending litigations with no sign of relief. Over 50 million cases await disposal — a number that continues to climb without even a one percent reduction in workload. The system is overburdened, understaffed, and painfully slow. Vacancies across all levels of the judiciary, procedural complexities, and excessive reliance on litigation have turned justice into a distant dream for millions. What should be a swift and fair process often becomes a generational struggle.

This crisis demands not mere reform, but revolution. India must adopt a multi-pronged approach.

  • Strengthen Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms such as mediation and arbitration.

  • Fully integrate technology for case management, evidence handling, and scheduling.

  • Fill vacant positions and improve judicial infrastructure.

  • Promote legal literacy to reduce unnecessary litigation.

Justice delayed is not only justice denied — it’s justice diminished. If India’s democracy is to stand strong, its judiciary must evolve from a slow-moving institution to a dynamic, tech-driven system capable of truly serving its people.
